On This Day in Dance Music History: Avicii and Nicky Romero Released "I Could Be The One"

Remembering the song that ignited an EDM friendship.

In 2012 the EDM world was awash with main stage-ready anthems, but songs by Nicky Romero and the late Avicii routinely rose to the top. As such, it only made sense for the two to team up on a track, and what resulted was "I Could Be The One," which came out on December 26th, 2012.

Avicii (real name Tim Bergling) and Nicky Romero (real name Nick Rotteveel van Gotum) toyed around with a number of different versions of "I Could Be The One," whose working title was "Nicktim." One scrapped version contained a sample by French blog house duo Justice's "D.A.N.C.E." The final version features production elements contributed by Bergling's former manager, Ash Pournouri, as well as vocals by Noonie Bao.

"I Could Be The One" reached #3 on the Swedish Singles Chart, and entered at #1 on the U.K. Singles Chart (for both artists, it was the first release to do so). Its legacy has withstood the test of time, as well. In January of 2019 the song broke 200 million Spotify streams, prompting a heartfelt response from van Gotum.

"I Could Be The One" by Avicii and Nicky Romero also received official remixes by DubVision, DANK, John Christian and Bent Collective
