"They call editing the last rewrite," 2016 Oscar-winning editor Margaret Sixel told NPR earlier this year. "We don't merely cut shots together; we are part of the storytelling process. If [Mad Max: Fury Road] it hadn't been correctly cut, I think it could have been a dismal failure."
Many of cinema's greatest accomplishments — from Apocalypse Now to Bonnie and Clyde to Lawrence of Arabia to Breathless — might well have been "dismal failures" were it not for their female editors. Why, then, do women only comprise 18% of editors today?
