How Did Lens Flares Become So Popular? (J.J. Abrams Didn't Have Anything to Do with It)

If you've watched anything by J.J Abrams surely you are well aware of what a lens flare is.

In fact, the director's love affair with these camera anomalies could make one think that flares were born into a place of great respect and honor among filmmakers — the first one twinkling in the eye of a camera operator as they realized that the world of cinematography would never be the same again. But that's not the case — they were thought of as mistakes. Vox guides us through the history of lens flares, from their humble beginnings to their (ahem) bright future.

Now that lens flares are more ubiquitous in today's films than a wilhelm scream, it's a little difficult to appreciate what they offer in terms of storytelling and style. And even if you're totally sick of seeing them, it is interesting to know that they were kind of a way for indie filmmakers to give a little "f*** you" to the Hollywood studio environment — like, "Your studio walls can't cage me! I'm going outside and not coming in until I smell like freshly cut grass and this entire roll of film is full of lens flares!" (Thanks, Dennis Hopper!)

A Meshing of Minds: The Similarities Between Maya Deren & David Lynch

When one thinks of avant-garde film, two champions of the genre that come immediately to mind are Maya Deren and David Lynch.

Now, even though Lynch branched out and crossed over into more mainstream filmmaking (if you can really call it that) with films like Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive, it's easy to understand why many believe the director was heavily influenced by the work of one of the most well-known experimental filmmakers of her time, Maya Deren.

Check out the similarities between the work of both directors In this Fandor video essay, edited by Joel Bocko.

Because of its time setting, ensemble cast, and story approach, Richard Linklater's Everybody Wants Some!! i very clearly functions as a spiritual sequel to the great 1993 indie hit Dazed and Confused, but that isn't the only past work of Linklater's that had a big hand in the writer/director formulating new period comedy. His last movie,Boyhood, also had a very important role to play, as the two films were not only developed practically simultaneously, but the intimacy of the family story made him want to make something a bit broader with his follow-up. How Darren Aronofsky Takes Us Down His Rabbit Hole (NSFW)

When it comes to Aronofsky, it's all about the sexy spirals and scary symmetry.

Watching a Darren Aronofsky movie can make you feel like a lab rat scurrying around a maze for some of that sweet, sweet cheese. First, we intensely search for meaning; then we take a minute to stare blankly at a wall; and finally we frantically return to navigating our nightmarish labyrinth. It is, more often than not, a frightening and dizzying experience.

So, how much of this feeling can be attributed to the dark thematic matter in Aronofsky's movies, and how much of it can be attributed to composition?

A video essay from STUDIO LITTLE illustrates the way in which camera movement, blocking, framing, and even the shape of objects collectively contribute to the jarring nature of Aronofsky's films.

What Happened To Robin Pre-Batman V Superman?

After fighting crime in Gotham City for 20 years, the DCEU’s Batman has endured more pain and tragedy than most people have felt in a lifetime. Here's Why Blocking is Essential—And How to Use it to Visually Tell Your Story

Blocking is much more important than you might think.

Blocking in cinema is the use of movement and proportion of people and objects within the frame's space. The term comes from theater, but in movies, the camera can travel through cinematic space, making blocking a powerful tool. In this video essay, Evan Puschak (Nerdwriter) breaks down a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo, and, as you can see, blocking shapes the scene dramatically.

As Puschak demonstrates, blocking gives subtext to a seemingly innocuous scene. Early in the film, Jimmy Stewart's character visits an old friend; while their encounter begins with Stewart controlling the space as he walks around freely and asks questions, the power radius slowly begins to shift and Stewart becomes the one who is controlled. Also of note: in the film, the camera is a sort of proxy character; its movement in the cinematic space is just as important as a character's, sometimes even more so.

Meet the Subway Impostor Whose Story You Couldn't Make Up if You Tried

This story is truly stranger than fiction.

Darius McCollum’s story is one of numbers: He’s been imprisoned over 30 times since the age of 15 for a total of 23 years behind bars. And filmmaker Adam Irving exchanged over 100 letters with him before starting to film his life story.

Irving’s film Off the Rails is one of those truly stranger-than-fiction documentaries, mostly due to the unusual nature of its subject’s crimes: McCollum is notorious for impersonating New York City bus drivers and subway conductors, commandeering their vehicles, and driving their routes.

Irving is not nearly the first, nor the only storyteller to take a stab at telling McCollum’s bizarre tale. No less than 27 documentary makers approached McCollum prior to Irving’s outreach, and Julia Roberts is slated to star as McCollum’s attorney in a fictional screen adaptation being produced by The Gotham Group. But Off the Rails is the first time this story has been successfully presented on screen.

How Score Can be Used to Laugh With (But Not At) Your Characters [PODCAST]

Director Alex Lehmann learned a lot from his composer about how to use music in his film, but he also gained some knowledge about working together: "You can squash amazing collaborations just by being afraid."

[soundcloud]

No Film School sat down with Lehman and composer Crystal Grooms Mangano at SXSW 2016 to talk about their collaboration on the soundtrack of Lehman's feature documentary Asperger's Are Us. The film, picked up by Netflix after the SXSW screenings, follows a group of friends who deal with their own Asperger's through stand-up comedy. In our podcast, the pair humorously and candidly describe their collaborative process, how a composer can elevate your film with music, and how to walk the fine line between laughing with the main characters and not at them. And we get to listen to a few pieces from the film's original soundtrack, too!

Deadpool Almost Had An Extremely Meta End Credits Sequence

As if Deadpool wasn't enough of a smart-assed shot to the arm of superhero films, there was one more step that could have sent the whole damned enterprise over the top. It turns out that the film-makers behind this year's runaway box office smash wanted to do something rather unique with their end credits sequence: they wanted to make their own Honest Trailer. The Art of the Title caught up with Deadpool director Tim Miller and asked him about the other end credits sequence ideas that eventually lead to the mischieviously hand drawn credits. Miller confirmed that those credits weren't ...

Reduce the Noise: Basic Tips for Shooting in Low Light

Shooting in low light situations can leave you with a grainy, muddy image that is probably best left off of your timeline. But even though it can be tricky, there are ways to make your footage look a whole lot better.

Simon Cade of DSLRguide offers some basic solutions when shooting in low light — ones that don't require you to buy a whole new expensive camera that can handle the lack of available light.

If you're a beginner, especially one who doesn't have access to light kits or professional cameras with plenty of latitude, these tips are directed at you.

Use a wide aperture

The standard metaphor to understand how an aperture works is a faucet: the more you open up your faucet (aperture) the more water (light) comes out. Essentially, the wider your aperture the more light hits your sensor. So, if you know you're going to be shooting in low light situations, try to use a lens with the lowest aperture you can get your hands on and then open that baby up.

Director Patty Jenkins will be at the helm of the movie, with Gal Gadot in the starring role... but one thing that composer Hans Zimmer wants to see is more women involved in the creation of the blockbuster's music. The Oscar winner broached this subject ...
