Just because techno is a big business nowadays doesn't mean Time Warp's forgotten how to stay true.
For how ubiquitous the term “business techno” has become among dance music purists, it’s remarkable how few of them can explain what it means. The phrase was coined by UK producer Shifted in protest of a Resident Advisor article before emerging as a viral trope in The Worst Techno Memes Ever Group Page. Unlike more cut-and-dry genre descriptors (some of which we may have had a hand in popularizing), its exact definition remains somewhat nebulous.
Perhaps, then, it’s easier to describe what business techno isn’t - and what better place to look than the lineup of Time Warp NYC.
Don’t get us wrong, the organizers did their due diligence in curating a roster that would give the event brand’s first stateside show in five years a formidable draw. They also took the opportunity to give techno’s traditional and proper side ample representation, however. If you want to explore the non-business side of techno at Time Warp on November 22nd and 23rd, we recommend checking these five artists out.
Peggy Gou
Peggy Gou seems to have appeared out of nowhere, suddenly taking the dance music world by storm. Her initial aim with DJing was to become the first Korean woman to play Berghain. She’s done all that and more in a few short years.
The Berlin-based, Korean-born artist brings personality to her tracks, singing in Korean on her hit tunes “It Makes You Forget (Itgehane)” and “Starry Night.” Behind the decks, she’s fluid, rolling through house, techno, disco, and electro to capture audiences.
Gou takes the stage on day 2.
Ricardo Villalobos
Many recognize Ricardo Villalobos as a minimal techno pioneer and Time Warp mainstay.
With varied inspiration, from Depeche Mode to rhythmic South American music, the Chilean DJ/producer is a master of percussion, bringing simple soundscapes to life with remarkable percussive elements. Hear it on tracks like “Recat” and “Reannounce.”
NYC’s very own Avision (real name Anthony Cardinale) has been playing with turntables since the age of twelve and had his first residency in New Jersey at fifteen.
Supported by Adam Beyer, Maceo Plex, Nicole Moudaber, Chris Liebing, and Joseph Capriati, Cardinale has put out some stellar tracks over the years, with releases on influential labels like Paco Osuna’s Mindshake, Carl Cox’s Intec, and his brother Victor Calderone’s Matter+.
His sound is lean, metallic, and raw. Get a taste as Cardinale performs day 2.
Sonja Moonear
Born in the Swiss mountains, Sonja Moonear grew up immersed in classical music. She would often sneak out at night and go to all sorts of underground electronic music parties, though.
Now, Moonear runs the Ruta5 label, organizes electronic music events in Switzerland, works as a sound designer for Swiss-French TV, and tours the world as a DJ.
Slow grooves, twinkling synths, and of course, powerful kicks mark the Moonear way. Catch her perform on day 1.
Enzo Siragusa
Enzo Siragusa has had an illustrious career in electronic music, starting in the U.K. rave culture of the '90s. With his iconic Fuse event series, he’s built a loyal, cult-like following in London, carefully curating parties with equal focus on community, atmosphere, and sound.
The dance music veteran takes the decks on day 1.

"Without You" featuring Sandro Cavazza by Avicii was featured in the trailer for the upcoming Scooby-Doo reboot.
Warner Bros. just released the debut trailer for their CGI reimagining of Scooby-Doo. EDM fans will immediately appreciate the song selection as "Without You" featuring Sandro Cavazza by the late Avicii (real name Tim Bergling) is prominently featured in the trailer.
Simply titled Scoob!, the new movie is a prequel to the 1969 series. It will tell the tale of how characters Scooby-Doo and Shaggy meet and join a team of paranormal mystery solvers. Among the cast is the original voice of Scooby-Doo, Frank Welker, as well as Zac Efron, Gina Rodriguez, Will Forte, Amanda Seyfried and others.
"Without You" was released on August 10th, 2017, as a single off of Bergling's Avīci (01) EP, which was the final body of work released before his tragic passing. The song would go on to become his seventh number one track in his home country of Sweden.
Scoob! is now in post-production and is set to hit theaters on May 15th, 2020. For more information, you can visit the official website for the movie here.
So I started making Cordials lately. Just finished making Second batch of delicious #Limoncello and started a batch of #Arancello for my honey. Nice refreshing aperitif’s for after dinner. Serve these chilled in a Pony glass also known as a Cordial glass and watch the SMILES as your guests get their first sip. Cordial glass looks kind of like a shot glass sized Champagne flute with a short stem.
After a run of heavy-hitting dubstep tracks, Crankdat has returned to Monstercat to remind fans of his softer side with “Falling.”
Still on the high from his aptly-titled Halloween EP release, FEARWORLD, Crankdat returns to Monstercat to remind fans of his softer, more melodic side in his new single, “Falling.”
Unlike his horror-inspired singles off of FEARWORLD, which unleashed screeching bass and supercharged drops, “Falling” features a sultry, soft-spoken vocal and an uplifting melody. Crankdat (real name Christian Smith) zeroes in on his future bass repertoire, creating a heart-rending fusion between his gritty, gear-inspired bass sounds with a more lush vocal.“It’s been a while since I’ve done some pretty stuff,” Smith wrote to his socials.
Similar to the beautifully crafted single, “Nothing Matters” of his GEARWORLD VOL. 1 EP, Smith carried a sorrowful tone throughout the track with impassioned, longing lyrics. Though fans have seen this side of Smith in small doses throughout his career, the multi-faceted producer seems to be pushing himself to new heights and experimenting with more vocal-based tracks.
Glass Animals are collaboration with Denzel Curry for their first new song in three years.
Glass Animals just announced their first new track in three years. This time, the psychedelic pop band has collaborated with hip-hop artist Denzel Curry for a song titled "Tokyo Drifting."
The four-piece shared a short teaser video on Twitter formally announcing the track and giving fans a taste of what's to come. The clip doesn't reveal much, but fans have already begun to break down the short sample note by note in anticipation of its release.
In August of 2016, Glass Animals released their second studio album, How to Be a Human Being, giving fans ample time to prepare for their latest.
This is not the first time the British band have collaborated with a hip-hop artist, as some will remember the 2015 track "Lose Control" on which they joined forces with Joey Bada$$. In addition to the Glass Animals collaborations, lead singer and producer Dave Bayley collaborated with Flume for his companion EP to Skin.
"Toyko Drifting" by Glass Animals and Denzel Curry is set for release on Wednesday, November 13th.
